On 9th October, Ryedale District Council prosecuted a woman for falsely claiming a Single Person Discount. This is the first prosecution of a single person discount fraud by the authority.
The 36 year old of Northstead, Duggleby had been in receipt of a Single Person Discount on her council tax account. An allegation was received that she was living at the property with her husband and was not entitled to the discount. An investigation conducted by Veritau, the council’s fraud investigation team, found that she was not entitled to receive a single person discount as she was not the sole adult at the property. It was found that she had falsely claimed the discount for almost two years.
As a result of her fraudulent activity the defendant received a discount of £813.24 to which she was not entitled. On the 9th October she pleaded guilty to all charges at Scarborough Magistrates Court and received fines totaling £680.
Angela Jones, Business Support Manager at Ryedale District Council, said:
“This was a deliberate attempt to falsely claim discounts from the council. Council Tax fraud deprives the council of funding used to support the whole community. This case demonstrates that the council will not tolerate this type of abuse and will pursue prosecutions where appropriate.”
