Data Privacy Day takes place on Sunday 28 January 2024 and aims to help raise awareness of how organisations and individuals can manage and protect their personal data.

For this year’s Data Privacy Day, the theme is ‘take control of your data’. To reflect this, in the run-up to the day, we wanted to provide you with some helpful information on data subject rights and how schools and trusts should handle requests.

Data Subject Rights

The rights individuals have under UK GDPR are:

  • The right to be informed
  • The right of access
  • The right to rectification
  • The right to erasure
  • The right to restrict processing
  • The right to data portability
  • The right to object
  • Rights in relation to automated decision making, including profiling

Data subjects can submit a request relating to these rights to any organisation that holds their data.

More information on individuals rights can be found on the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) website.

Schools and Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs)

Veritau has a specialist team to support schools and MATs with data protection.

Watch our Data Privacy Day video below to learn more about each of the key data subject rights and how they apply in a school setting.

Data Protection Support

Veritau can help guide your organisation through the complex world of data protection, including responding to data subject requests and complaints.

We act as Data Protection Officer (DPO) for over 600 public sector clients, including schools, multi-academy trusts, local authorities, and national sporting bodies.

We also provide data protection training to schools and multi-academy trusts via our dedicated e-learning platform, Veritau Learn. The platform is home to our growing suite of interactive e-learning modules and allows users to complete, oversee and monitor completion of data protection training.
