To celebrate our 10th anniversary, we're doing a focus on 10 staff members to learn more about the people who make Veritau what it is. Each day this week and next, you’ll see a profile about one of the team, from across our different service areas.
Connor is a Senior Auditor. He has been with Veritau for nearly five years, starting as a trainee and progressing to a senior position when the opportunity arose. Connor was looking for a traineeship after university, and wanted to be in a profession
He saw the graduate training scheme at Veritau and liked the idea of being in the public sector but within a shared service, so we have own our separate identity from our client councils. He studied Physical Geography at Leeds University so was used to working with systems and processes. He feels this has really helped him in his role as an auditor.
“The training was a steep learning curve but I enjoy a challenge.” Connor completed the Certified Internal Auditor qualification as a trainee, and picked up key skills from on-the-job training. He says this saw him have plenty of exposure to clients early on, and he had to adapt and find his feet quickly.
“Internal support networks were key to development. This highlights the strength of Veritau’s people.” His favourite part of the job is getting to meet all different kinds of people, who are performing different jobs at all levels of the organisation. He says it’s interesting to find out about different people’s roles, what other service areas do and why they do it.
Connor is also a qualified risk management professional and leads in the provision of the company’s risk management facilitation services. He was introduced to this through his internal audit qualification, at a time when the risk management service was being delivered by just one member of staff to just one of our clients.
Having learnt about the service and gained some knowledge through his studies, he volunteered to join the team and help deliver the service. There is now a specific team of qualified risk management professionals with a set work programme and a rising profile that has resulted in numerous client requests. The team travels all over the area delivering workshops to various clients and provides ongoing support.
Veritau has grown significantly during Connor’s time here, not just in the diversification of audit and risk management work, but in the counter fraud and information governance teams too. In the audit team, they have expended the IT audit service, as he puts it, “embracing technology to provide greater assurance for clients”.
In his spare time, Connor enjoys watching cricket, spending time with family, going for country walks and singing in a local gospel choir.
